Common Issues With Your Engine Cooling System
posted on
11/16/2020 4:31:18 PM
The primary job of the cooling system is to prevent the engine from overheating. The
cooling system
transfers the engine heat to the air to ensure the optimum engine operating temperature is obtained and is kept constant. All the components that make up the cooling system help it to properly absorbs, transports, and dissipates heat. Your engine creates small explosions every single minute that build up a lot of heat. The heat needs to be adequately channeled away, or it can potentially damage an engine beyond repair. The cooling system’s components include the radiator, radiator cap, one or more fans, hoses, a water pump, and a thermostat. It also uses liquid coolant in the form of water flowing through a series of hoses to reduce the heat.
If too much heat builds up in your engine, your
engine
could grind to a screeching halt, leaving you stranded and in need of a new motor. Having a properly working cooling system is critically important to a healthy car. Recognizing the signs of a cooling system problem is crucial to make sure that the issue doesn’t quickly escalate to ruin your engine.
The Four Common Problems With Cooling Systems
Water Pump Failure:
The water pump is the heart of the engine’s cooling system. It helps circulate the coolant throughout the entire cooling circuit and regulates the coolant flow rate. Water pumps arecpowered by a pully system that is turned by your serpentine belt. If this pump fails, the water can’t flow through your engine system, and your engine will quickly overheat.
Faulty Hoses:
Hoses come in all shapes and sizes to carry coolant to a variety of under- applications and tight engine spaces. If any of those hoses leak, the coolant will not have the pressure needed to properly complete its cycle. This will lead to rapid overheating and leakage. Cooling system upkeep will include inspection of
belts and hoses
for indicators of holes or cracks. Hoses wear out over time and will require replacement.
Radiator Leaks:
Your radiator cools the water in your cooling system after it has absorbed heat from your engine. Radiator leaks can affect its ability to cool your engine. Rocks or other pieces of debris can also put large holes in your radiator, which will require repair or replacement.
Thermostat Failure:
Your thermostat is a device that regulates the temperature of your engine and controls how much coolant can flow through your radiator. A failed thermostat may prevent heat dissipation and result in your engine overheating and failing faster.
