Catalytic Converters in Woodbridge, VA
←
Back
A catalytic converter is a device that uses a catalyst to convert the harmful compounds in your vehicle into less harmful chemicals. The catalytic converter helps to control emissions produced by internal combustion engines. Catalytic converters must also be very efficient and provide maximum space for the catalyzed reactions to occur.
What Does The Catalytic Converter Do?
In a catalytic converter, the catalyst is coated onto ceramic beads that are housed in the muffler attached to the exhaust pipe. The catalyst helps to convert carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide and the nitrogen oxides back into nitrogen and oxygen.

How the Catalytic Converter Works
The catalytic converter is located on the underside of your vehicle, and it helps clean up vehicle emissions before expelling them into the environment. It works to heat unburned particles in your engine’s exhaust gases. As your engine warms up, the catalytic converter will heat to an operating temperature of
500 – 1200°F
to allow it to burn harmful particles in the exhaust gases. The catalyst inside is usually made of precious metals such as platinum, rhodium, or palladium.

If your catalytic converter is failing, you will need to have it replaced to restore your vehicle's low emission status and overall performance. Your check engine light will come on and your engine’s power and fuel economy can begin to diminish. If it becomes completely clogged, the check engine light will begin to flash, and your engine may stall or refuse to start.
